Catherine Sweeney

Born, raised and educated in Texas, Catherine has lived on the east and west coasts, in the Middle East and in South America, observing the visually rich world and gaining inspiration for her work. She began formal Fine Arts training at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied photography, painting and serigraphy under Tomás Pantin, Susan Whyne and Tim High. Catherine continues to expand her portfolio in landscape and street photography with the guidance of Tim Vollmer and Peter Turnley. She often walks the streets of Manhattan, making photos of scenes saturated in contrasts of light, shadow and color. Her photographs serve as references for her paintings.

Catherine’s painting style can be defined as Contemporary Representational Realism with strong Impressionist and graphic influences. A dark background or large negative space is often used to frame brightly depicted subjects, giving an intensity to ordinary scenes of urban landscapes and florals.

As her paintings have evolved, Catherine can trace her own life of many contrasts loosely represented through her style. She hopes that her optimistic outlook comes through her work. Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy ... think on these things.

Catherine enjoys tremendously building her body of work at the Art Students League of New York under the tutelage of Margaret McCann and Boyce Cummings.
